Texas LTC Application — 5 Steps

  1. Take an LTC course from a certified instructor. Pass the written exam and the firearms qualification. Either:
  2. Apply with the State of Texas — $42.95. File through the official DPS LTC application portal: dps.texas.gov · LTC Application Information ↗
  3. Get fingerprinted through Identogo — $10. Go to uenroll.identogo.com, schedule an appointment, and use service code 119Q91 ("Handgun Permit in Texas").
  4. Submit your signed LTC-104 form (the certificate from Step 1, converted to PDF) to Texas DPS through the application portal.
  5. Wait for processing. Usual turnaround is 2–4 weeks. DPS mails the license to the address on your application.

Class Day FAQ

What kind of handgun should I bring?

Any name-brand handgun that you trust will function reliably. If you don't own one yet, we have rental options available at the range — just check the add-ons box when you enroll. Caliber doesn't matter for qualification (anything from .22 to .45 is fine).

What should I wear?

We recommend:

  • A hat (brimmed, like a ball cap — keeps brass off your face)
  • A shirt with a button-up collarno open V-neck shirts
  • Long pants — no shorts
  • Closed-toe shoes
What eye and ear protection do I need?

Handguns and rifles are loud. Bring:

  • Ear protection — over-the-ear muffs are best; plugs are acceptable. Complete ear coverage is preferred.
  • Eye protection — required. Prescription glasses are fine, or standard shooting glasses.

Don't have any? Check the add-ons box when you enroll — we sell both at cost.

How do I clean my gun?

We cover cleaning technique in most classes. Bring a cleaning kit if you have one (add-on available at enrollment if not). We recommend cleaning your weapon before leaving the range — it's part of the discipline.

How much ammo will I need?

Standard LTC qualification is 50 rounds. For Learn to Shoot or Personal Protection, plan for 100–150 rounds. Check the add-ons box at enrollment if you need us to provide it.

Who is responsible for storing my firearm?

As a gun owner, you and you alone are responsible for the storage and safe keeping of all your weapons. We carry quick-access pistol vaults (Stop Box USA) and full safes through our dealer network — call if you need a recommendation for your home setup.

Can my spouse / family member sit in?

Yes — additional family members can attend at a reduced rate. Mention it on the enrollment form (or call) so we know to expect them.

What if I have to reschedule?

No refunds, but we will reschedule you for any class up to 6 months from your original registration date. No-shows pay a $10 rescheduling fee. Gift certificates are valid for 1 year.
